If you need a surface then I think you'll need to Patch the points, unfortunately Patch won't be available until the next release goes out. You can always bake the points of course and use the Rhino Patch command manually.

Join Connects surfaces at a shared edge (or curves at a point). When these surfaces are joined they create a polysurface. You cannot turn on control points on a polysurface. They must first be exploded or a surface must be extracted (ExtractSrf) and manipulated as individual surfaces. Only surfaces (not curves) can trim or split polysurfaces. If you still want to create stacked control point surfaces, keep the control points of the shape curves nonstacked and stack the points after the surface has been created.
